Behold the newest web trend that is changing how people work, communicate and mingle on the web. Or could it all just be hyped up pile of turd?

What am I talking about, I’m talking about Twitter of course, the spam filled cesspit of nonsensical garbage which is supposed to let people keep in touch with family, friends and co-workers as well as keeping tabs on competitors, websites, and all kinds of other people who use the service because … they’ve been told it’s important for their websites and for keeping up with the crowd.

Ok, yes I understand that Twitter is probably one of the best micro-blogging applications available … if it were invented over 10 years previously. The simplicity of combining a bbs and blog, with a pinch of myspace for flavoring seems an idea that many thought of before, though the powers that be over the internet have decided that this is a vital part of every webmaster’s, ceo’s or business’s livelyhood.

The features of  Twitter are only useful for two kinds of people. One is a person who tries every god damn social networking site available to man. And the second are webmasters and business owners who heard about it and think it’s the right thing to do.

Here is a list of the plus factors involved on Twitter -

1) Adds a little more exposure to your website or yourself, though this is probably tiny, unless you are endlessly networking on Twitter with other hopeful souls.

2) Let’s people keep upto date with your life, plans, future, thoughts.

3) You are with the ‘in-crowd’ - remember if you are not using Twitter, you will be exiled into web obscurity, your business will collapse, and most probably you’re internet will be cut off.

Ok let’s go through why nobody needs Twitter -

1) Although adding minimal exposure to your profile, you will be bombarded with requests, spam and lose interest almost immediately.

2) Ever heard of phones, SMS, MSN, ICQ e-mail, etc etc? And yes, I can hear many Twatter experts laughing at this, so read the question again. Will you still be using Twitter in 2 years? No. The others, of course yes. Yes, it’s a web trend and one of the worst yet.

3) The good thing is that many top webmasters, business owners and so on are not with the in-crowd, and most are continuing to do very well without Twitter.

4) Keeping in touch if you have a website is easy, tell people on your website, why direct somebody to another website to tell them something that is related to your website?

5) People come to your website for your content, why send them to another website to possibly get distracted and look at others content?

6) Twitter is another webmaster trend, much like technorati, it’s pretty useless for anybody outside of this bracket, and mostly useless for people inside that bracket.

If you use Twitter, please do everybody a favor and only allow yourself to post messages, otherwise it just turns into a messy eyesore of spam links and garbage talk, or is that what Twitter is all about?
